It's simple why we support dictators etc.: when the foreign gov't is pro-US multinational corp, we back them up 100%. The more authoritarian, the greater the likely profits thanks to long term stability. And we sell 'em heavy artillery. And later if it all goes sour, we build up our own military to nullify the terrible threat which has suddenly appeared which nobody could have predicted.

Except for the ordinary American citizens and the citizens of the country to be milked, we're all winners.
