I really don't worry so much about a "dirty bomb". It's essentially an "area denial" weapon, not so much designed to immediately kill people.

In fact, if one was detonated, a very quick decontamination response (shower, and thorough scrubbing down) would negate much of the long-term damage from having radioactive particles being exposed to the skin (and most soldiers carry basic decon kits with their masks).

But it will mean that the area where it's detonated will be radioactive, and uninhabitable, for the foreseeable future.

Worry more about chemical and biological weapons.
