I wonder if a somewhat left-of-center equilibrium like most of Europe and Japan have is a natural consequence of communications technology. Cellphones, Facebook, Soundbite News Network, a billion amateur journalists (= "bloggers") have changed how individual opinions are formed and shared, especially by those who aren't old enough to be future-shocked by it. Of course, our fellows in the G8 or G-whatever it is now ... think of the USA as rather to the right of center. Our incoherent and solipsistic foreign policy activities have not helped us there.
