I got a free hand me down iPhone 3G which I intend to use as a glorified, camera equipped iPod Touch. Meaning, I'll completely ignore its phone capability (with the exception of Skype, naturally).

Question: I'll soon be driving across the country with it. Is it possible to utilize the iPhone's GPS without having activated any phone plans on it? Does the iPhone's GPS work only if the phone is activated or the phone is on wifi, or is the iPhone capable of receiving the GPS signal directly, without utilizing the phone or wifi?

Are there any fave apps for that?
