I don't think that's the case. But even if it was, those people had a very shallow understanding of the topic.

"Global warming" exclusively refers to an increase in the average temperature of the entire earth. "Climate change," which includes an expected increase in extreme weather, is a result of global warming.

It's not surprising that a lot of people don't understand the distinction, but it's real, it's there, and it's scientifically supported.
