Re: Rail Tanker Cars - A Pure Play?

Seems like Buffet had a complete plan in mind. I was searching to see if there was a pure play for rail tank cars, lessors, manufacturers or rail facilities and it seems like all roads lead back to Buffet companies.

Union Tank Car ( utlx.com ) is the original company which has re-invented itself. It got folded into Trans Union Corporation which became part of The Marmon Group of companies in 1981. The Marmon Group of companies ( marmon.com ) is one of the Berkshire Hathaway companies.

The Marmon Group – Now The Marmon Group, a Berkshire Hathaway company, is an international association of approximately 130
business units that operate independently within diverse business sectors. Member businesses employ more than 15,000 people and operate more than 250 production facilities, primarily in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe and China.

Each member business operates under its own management within a sector structure that provides access to the experience and expertise of other members in related businesses and markets.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been buying companies that collect, store and deliver NG and Oil from US and Canada. I have no coverage in the rail end and the tanker cars made a lot of sense but I have yet to find a pure play.

It seems like it has come full circle. My grandfather made a lot of his money buying, maintaining and leasing oil tanker rail cars out of Chicago. His approach was to just make a little on a lot of re-occurring transactions. The tanker cars during that period lasted up to 10 years and generated enough revenue to pay for the asset in 2-3 years. As long as they were maintained well and were under long term lease contracts it was a good money maker.

Any idea as to a possible "Pure" rail tanker play in the manufacture, leasing or logistics scheduling areas? I wonder if Buffet has in his plans to build NG and/or oil intrastate pipe lines along some of the right of ways of his Burlington Northern rail business.
