My understanding is/was that GTL technology came up on the radar screen prior to the huge amounts of North American shale Gas bein discovered as a way to export the huge quantities of stranded ME natural gas to N.A.. Since the discovery of NA shale the importation of LNG is no longer needed and hence the technology is not either.

However, conversion of coal into syn gas may have application in NA and Sasol is the world leader at that.
