Fujitsu hopes to use Intel chips
By Reuters
November 13, 1997, 5:30 a.m. PT

Fujitsu (FJTSY) said today that that it hopes to develop high-power servers that incorporate Intel (INTC) semiconductor chip technology as well as its own.

A Fujitsu spokesman said that the company hopes to integrate Intel's microprocessors with its own Interconnect technology, which would allow a 100-fold increase in the number of microprocessors that can be connected in a single system.

Six to eight microprocessors can be connected in an existing system, the spokesman said.

Fujitsu also hopes to introduce servers equipped with the next-generation Merced microprocessor, currently being developed by Intel and Hewlett-Packard (HWP).

The new 64-bit microprocessor is expected to hit the market in 1999, an Intel spokeswoman said.

The Fujitsu spokesman said, however, that the company has yet to clinch a deal with Intel.
