Motion X probably won't work as it has to download the maps via a data plan. I suspect the same is true of Google maps. My guess is you have to buy one of the apps where the maps reside on the phone like Navigon. I've got both Navigon North America and MotionX Drive and like motionx better but if you lose your signal in the boonies it doesnt work.

Ideal solution would be to rent an iPad w/3G for the trip. iPads are dynamite for road trips. but I don't know if anyone rents them yet... which BTW would be a great business.
