Motion X probably won't work as it has to download the maps via a data plan.

Right you are, but I can get MotionX for $2.99, plus a month worth of their data download via wifi, for another $2.99. So, for $6, I could wifi download the maps and be set for the trip before I even take off, don't you think? At that point, all the phone would need to know on the trip is its GPS position - which should work without a data plan. Am I wrong on this? That is the critical part: does the GPS still work, when there is no data plan or wifi connection? In other words, do the previously downloaded MotionX maps still work when a standard, completely connected iPhone is taken to the boonies, where there is no phone or wifi connection?
