Bill and the 9 people who rec'd his post #408975, and the media reporting the January Employment Report, have forgotten (or never knew) that the stock market is a discounting mechanism.

What happened in January almost doesn't matter, even as the media almost ignored that payrolls were 40,000 higher for (1) December than first reported and (2) November as previously revised. That's almost equal to the low "headline" number for January.

[so the +49,000 for one month was really +89,000 for one report]

The contrast is that the broad market averages were up 4 or 5 days last week, the DJIA (up all 5) is over 12000, and even more of an indication of reality is the number of companies declaring increased dividends. The number on the daily list shot up last week, and the list includes companies in a broad array of market sectors.
