Can anyone help with Vista+Sleeping?

I am wondering if anyone has experienced this issue and can throw a few bones my way --- or at least point me in the right direction.

I have the sleep mode set up under the power management system.
~ Under "full power" I tend to have sleep turned off.
~ Under "power saver" (normal mode even when plugged in), after X minutes the SS comes on and then after Y minutes it will go to sleep.

Here are some of the cases:
a) I reboot the machine and after a period of time, the system works properly and goes to sleep.

b) My wife uses the machine and though it may work a day or so, after that, if she walks away, the machine will literally never go to sleep.

c) Initially I found this was the case mostly if my son used the machine but seeing as they have been XBOX obsessed (more like a disease but we won't go there) for sure whatever my son has done, does not affect the machine (so I can rule out that he is logged in but a switch user occurred with my wife).

d) She is NOT changing any settings wrt SS or sleep.

To this end I have reviewed all settings just to be sure - and it all looks fine - as per (a) after a reboot all is well.

I was hoping that someday I will get an MSFT update and everything will be fixed. Hasn't happened.

I have turned off wireless - thinking that perhaps it is in constant communication with the router and the "acpi" is kicking in. I normally plug it into the GIG network.

Vaguely remember some mouse issue with the "wake from sleep" but disabled that. At this time the only way to wake up the PC is to hit the power button.

I am going nuts with this. Seems like I have spent so much time to no avail that I am in the "giving up" camp. I ask my wife to remember to put it to sleep at night but she forgets. So I have to. Stuff like that makes me want to go out tomorrow and buy a $500-750 desktop and be done with it. (No not get rid of the notebook but just keep it off most of the time until needed and let her use the desktop). The notebook helped keep the room tidy as we all now how desktops and cables go hand in hand and make everything look like a complete mess. With the notebook I don't even need a UPS.

If anyone has any thoughts please advise. I have googled this a number of times but always seem to not get anywhere.

(Please, no smart answers like "Upgrade to Win7" - to me if that is the answer, then there has to be a fix or something for Vista as it is working in Win7)

Thanks
b
