HTC, Samsung Continue Smartphone Success By Sindre Lia, Tuesday 8 February 2011

New IDC numbers reveal that HTC and Samsung succeeded greatly in the smartphone market last year, and both are busy succeeding as we speak too.

HTC's CEO, Peter Chou, once said that 2010 would be the year when Android's potential as a market winner would be revealed. According to new numbers released by IDC, Android has turned out be a market winner for HTC, as well as for Samsung. The two companies account for nearly 15% of the smartphone market share in 2010 as a whole, for the most part thanks to their respective Android smartphones. Soon, the two companies may hold 20% of the market share, as Q4 2010 shipping numbers reveals a very positive trend for both.

HTC has started 2011 very aggressively by announcing a range of new Android smartphones. The HTC EVO Shift 4G for Sprint is already available in stores, while AT&T will release the HTC Inspire 4G later this week. Next week, Verizon Wireless is rumored to release the anticipated HTC Thunderbolt - a 4G LTE Android smartphone. A new smartphone trio for EMEA markets is expected to be announced next week too.

Samsung, on the other hand, is expected to officially unveil the next generation of Galaxy S devices next week. The big question is whether the new Samsung Orion dual-core chipset is ready for prime time, and whether it'll ultimately be shown off as part of a Galaxy S2 series. The chipset was officially announced back in September 2010, but rumors are suggesting that NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset may compliment the Samsung Hummingbird chipset this spring, while smartphones based on the Orion chipset will be released at a later stage.

One thing is for sure though, Samsung has three high-end smartphones for major U.S. carriers slated for release this spring. T-Mobile will release the Galaxy S 4G by the end of February, a slight upgrade from last year's Vibrant. AT&T and Verizon Wireless, on the other hand, have bigger upgrades slated for release this spring. The Samsung Infuse 4G for AT&T and Samsung Stealth V for Verizon Wireless are both promising devices. Sprint is promising more 4G smartphones for 2011, so we guess we should expect a new high-end Samsung device as part of that effort too at some point.
