<<But I do love this one: "Surely money and
opportunity shall disdain him(or atleast his shareholders)." Let's hear it for the
concept of money having free-will. Now we have neo-Darwinian existential
capitalism liberally mixed with a few paradigm shifts phrased in the manner of a
biblical psalm (to give it just the right ring of truth).

So explain to me why HWP didn't tank when it made calculators that were higher
quality than TI's?? Try tackling that simple excercise without invoking paradigm
shifts or any other cliche.>>

No need to get so annoyed. I may have used "biblical language" there
and I apologize if it offends you, but I seriously believe that
only the hungry survive! I am delighted that intc is planning to
tackle all segments of the market(maybe reluctantly). That's the
mark of a winner. Dell wants to only concentrate on one particular
segment of the market and will have to compete with IBM, DEC, CPQ
etc on this segment. Its competitors however, are fighting on all
fronts, and will gain market share in the nascent markets.

You really have to prove it to me that Dell's boxes are "higher quality than CPQ's". That's about the biggest poppycock I've heard!
Dell has had a (shrinking) advantage in inventory control and unfortunately for them, that is shrinking.
My sister made her own computer out of parts bought out of a swapmeet(armed iwth a philips screwdrive!).
She does not have a PhD in computer engineering, but rather, is an editor of a poetry magazine. Dell does not do much more than that as
far technology is concerned. A multiple of 50 for putting together
boxes is excessive(don't you think?). Don't forget Dell had a very
"appropriate" multiple a couple years ago and it was doing the same
things it is now. As a matter of fact, they were probably better
positioned at that time because the whole world did not have their
sights set on Dell. Now EVEN Steve Jobs wants to "emulate Dell's model". ewww!!!
