Ellison is backing off near term prospects for NC. IBM is seeing reduced uptake as well. I think the NC is an important new approach to IS infrastrucuture, but it requires a significant reworking of a lot of legacy architecture. Expect to see the NC as a great upgrade for the 35 million 3270 terminals (Business IBM will win.) but not as a core approach for IS for the next 18 months at least. NC adoption at the enterprise could also be put off until Y2K stuff is dealt with.

Although ORCL will be benefitting from the Y2k through apps and dbms, that will only last through mid next year. After that, its too late to try to go through the lengthy process of converting to a new system. Companies will have to pursue internal triage by then.
