Company Press Release

Marquette Introduces Wireless Capabilities to Redefine Patient
Monitoring Network Flexibility

MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1997--Marquette Medical Systems announced the release of Wireless LAN, a mobile monitoring system that offers seamless real-time networking connections, superior throughput and range, and uses off-the-shelf components based on the IEEE 802.11 industry standard for wireless Ethernet.

''Wireless LAN is the logical extension of Marquette's industry-standards-based approach to networking,'' said George
Hutchinson, senior product manager for networked products. ''Because it can be connected to any monitor on the Unity Network(R) with no modification necessary, Wireless LAN lets you decide which monitoring features to take beyond the traditional limitations of fixed Ethernet locations,'' continued Hutchinson.

The new system creates a true, 2-way wireless link for bed-to-bed viewing and bed-to-central communication, without sacrificing the performance features of a hard-wired, Ethernet-networked monitor. Marquette monitors can now be utilized in areas where Ethernet wiring does not currently exist or is not practical to install.

According to Jim Benney, clinical manager at Baylor University Medical Center, ''Wireless LAN is a key component of Marquette's Distributed Monitoring Care 2000 concept. With this degree of mobile monitoring, we're always connected. We can move monitors with the patients. Or quickly move monitors from room-to-room. We can even set up continuous
surveillance in hallways when necessary.

This system makes it possible to handle the rapidly changing patient acuity levels of overflow situations like never before, literally changing the way we practice healthcare.''

This new offering from Marquette is the result of a strategic alliance with Aironet Wireless Communications, Inc., a world leader in wireless technology. ''Without a doubt, it offers our customers superior technical performance,'' stated Hutchinson. Marquette's Wireless LAN operates in the 2.4 GHz radio frequency band. The access points use a frequency-hopping spread-spectrum technique that offers the greatest transmission range in the industry. ''But the real superiority of the system lies in the software,'' said Hutchinson. To ensure data throughput, the system dynamically balances the data load among the access points, while minimizing the risk of a bandwidth bottleneck.

In addition to Wireless LAN, Marquette's Distributed Monitoring Care 2000 consists of an entire suite of solutions developed to help the hospital maintain vital signs vigilance while maximizing flexibility. Marquette is using technology to remove barriers and help increase patient monitoring efficiency in the healthcare industry.

Marquette Medical Systems, Inc.
