Zune Services Starting to Make a Dent in iTunes
February 8, 2011 | Jason

Zune has long been the laughing stock of the media player and media service world, but statistics released yesterday by IHS Screen Digest reveal that Microsoft’s Music and video service is starting to make a name for itself. iTunes has been and probably will be number one in terms of video consumption by consumers, but a few new challengers have started to emerge to tackle the goliath from Apple.

Riding the wave of the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone, Zune has seen a +50% jump in growth when compared to 2009. Growing from 11.6% to 17.9% Zune’s share of the market can be most attributed to the addition of Zune services on the Xbox 360 which is becoming both a gaming console and a media consumption device for the living room. If Windows Phone does take off and become a hit in the mobile market, we could see Zune grow to be on par with iTunes, but that’s quite a bit down the road.

Arash Amel, IHS Digital Media Research Director, noted:

Apple faced serious competition from Microsoft’s Zune Video and Sony’s PlayStation Store, as well as from Amazon and — most significantly — Walmart.

With the ubiquitous iPhone, iPad and iPod lines pushing iTunes, Zune has quite a long way to go, but positioning themselves on arguably the best gaming console and on a mobile OS that’s sure to continue growing, they can almost guarantee themselves a large piece of the digital media pie.
