The truth is the real problem with iPad's out of the box pdf capability is that the closed system gives you no easy way of getting files onto and off of the device, short of emailing (which can be a problem with very large pdfs).

The built in reading capabilities were highly limited, the specifics of which I don't remember. Which is the reason I bought an app to do what should have been part of the core functionality.
