Microsoft didn't have to limit Excel too.

Access was enough.

Here's the thing. If you are a one man or mom/pop operation with little computer experience and you were starting a business you thought would grow you got plenty of advice:

There are no apps for Apple computers!

And the fact that a small business MIGHT need Access at a certain point... was enough for a lot of small business owners. Once in they were looked into an OS with thousands of crappy apps, crashes, expensive maintenance, viruses, wasted disks, lost data, etc.

It wasn't FORCED on them but it helped them make up their mind.

Using a crappy database like Access of course few knowledgeable people would recommend.

I'm not an expert on databases.

When I was a recruiter I don't remember any companies with hundreds of thousands using Access...
