File formats cannot be copyrighted.

How the data in the file is actually used could be proteced by trade secrets.

The MS 255 format has been exposed for years - Equis used to publish the format in their documentation and you can still get that format from their Compuserve support area.

They will not publish the 2000 format, they will license the code to update their files in exchange for a business relationship - i.e. they get $$$.

The Equis 255 format and the TC2000 format have been around quite a while and the details are pretty freely available on the internet and elsewhere. For all practical purposes, these formats are in the public domain.

It doesn't sound like the 2000 format is worth reverse engineering.
