It has been one year since the first Android smart phone was introduced in Korea. During the period, handsets with the OS (operating system) developed by Google have won over a huge number of domestic customers.

According to SK Telecom, over five million Koreans have opted for Android phones since Motorola’s Motoroi began to be marketed here a year ago as the first of its kind. The company added that tablet PCs running on the Android Honeycomb OS will take the baton this year.

During the past one year, 14,000 Android handsets were sold on daily average in the market, more than three times of Apple’s i-Phone. Currently, Android handsets’ combined market share here is over 60%.

Meanwhile, to dominate the local tablet PC market, SK Telecom is on all cylinders in product and software development. It is planning to release Motorola’s Xoom and LG Electronics’ G-Slate domestically in April.
