Ted, I don't get why Nicholas Kristof is arguing against straw men:

> Too many Americans bought into a lazy stereotype that Arab countries were inhospitable for democracy, or that the beneficiaries of popular rule would be extremists like Osama bin Laden.

The only ones who believed that stereotype were left-wingers who opposed the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Uh.......... over the past 4 decades, both Republican and Democratic administrations have supported dictatorships in the ME. How did they justify their positions? They would explain that the ME was not ready for democracy........the implication being that Middle Easterners were not sophisticated enough.

As for Iraq, the Bush Rs said the only way to get democracy in Iraq was to invade the country and overthrow Saddam. Not the smartest way to create a democracy but then the Bushies were not very smart.

Stop trying to rewrite history.
