If somehow we could get Congress to pass a bill that would state that effective with the next election after passage, any NEW member would NOT be eligible for any retirement plan other than Social Security, and would receive only a very modest health care package. Eventually, "grandfathered" members with their current "benefits of gold" would be eliminated by the passage of time, and you might even see the concept of "career" politicians disappear since it would no longer be as lucrative. Perhaps we would wind up with individuals whose only intention would be to do the right thing and then leave. They might voluntarily rotate themselves out of these positions.

We know that the current group won't introduce term limits and I don't imagine it would be any easier to get them to vote fewer benefits UNLESS they were grandfathered into their gravy train for as long as they remained. Twenty or thirty years from now we would not only be saving money by eliminating new lifetime pension obligations for new politicians, but we might even return to a "citizen" Congress ... all without imposing term limits.

Our current group of elected officials are literally UNABLE to admit that they caused the economic problem by their reckless spending and are equally incapable of making the tough decisions to fix it for fear of sacrificing their lifestyle. Something has to be done to address the root cause of our problem ... which is the reality that our current elected officials have both grave responsibilities impacting the world yet have absolutely no accountability for the outcomes of their decisions.
