brief explanation of why they changed the name to Mumbai?

I will give it a shot - I am not an expert in this matter.....

THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT I HAVE HEARD - MAY NOT BE REALITY...

The land area that consisted of 7 Islands, was in times before my father was born, known and dedicated to a Hindu Goddess - Mumba Devi (hence old name Mumbai). Eventually, the Brits were there, the 7 Islands got to become 1 land mass (think land fill), and the place was named as Bombay by the Brits.

Now, until (I think 1960-61), the current Indian states of Maharashtra & Gujarat were collectively called "the state of Bombay".

Well, when the state division happened, there was still Bombay as capital of Maharashtra. It was in 1996 that the state government made a change in the statutes, to say Bombay is now Mumbai.
