"As a result he does not subscribe to biblical inerrancy."

I believe he does. And this post will address that.

"By presenting it as all or nothing, you are creating a dichotomy that does not align with the real world"

I disagree. I believe you are inadvertently trivializing the importance of inerrancy to Christianity. I agree that for the majority of Christians this issue does not arise because they are told what to believe and why--or they find one of the 38,000 sects that seem to them to be a good fit. But there is a real reason why there are over thirty-eight thousand Christian sects at loggerheads with one another over "doctrinal minuitae" and why they worry over millions of pages for the "proper" biblical words and meanings. It may be minutae to you, because you don't belong to one of those 38,000 sects? I accept that. But I think the Church has spoken for herself rather well in defining Church Doctrine for 20 centuries.

Here is a simple chart dividing those 38,000 from the other 37,999 which are likely going to Hell. You will see that inerrancy is pretty much a universal position of the church--even today when science and civilization make it more and more difficult to rationalize the vast majority of the bible.

The belief in Absolute Truth communicated to man is the only place the Church can derive any authority. That is not a trivial point.

"Inerrancy is neither a necessary nor widespread doctrinal plank

It is necessary for any rational approach to Christianity. And it has been reaffirmed through the centuries time and time again by Church leaders. Don't confuse inerrancy with literal or uninformed interpretation. Inerrancy not only allows hermeneutics but it demands it!

"By insisting that observers of religions accept all the doctrinal minutiae of their sometimes contradictory doctrines"

Educated Christians are well aware that the thousands of contradictory Christian Faiths believe passionately that their “doctrinal minutiae” is a vital difference and is of critical and eternal importance. The bible derives from the Authority of the True word of God or it derives from NOTHING. And I feel obliged to point out to you (again) that the basis of these 38,000 or so deal breakers of faith rests on those "doctrinal minutia" you mentioned. If the bible is NOT "God's Word"--then it really informs the discussion not one whit. Gaskell certainly knows that and that is why he critiques it word for word in his "scientific" excursions as a soldier for Christ. Gaskell’s writings show that he knows with "Absolute Certainty" that without inerrancy a believer has only belief...and no reasons.

Gaskell is an Absolute believe in inerrancy. He does not lose one word of the Inspired breath of God. NOT ONE WORD.

But he will tell you in his own words in a few moments.

Obviously, some can escape from this fact (they think) by moving the necessary argument of inerrancy into the new age trickery of infallibility. However, It merely places the text and imagery into a separate layer of the canvas.

"As a result, I don't see Gaskell's being a Christian (one who, when faced with the choice between the Burgess Shale and Balaam's ass, went with the aged rock) as enough to characterize him as "a nut"."

Actually, I believe he rides two donkeys which is why I consider him intelligent but irrational. As you will see later in this post, Gaskell denies not one word of the Divine and Absolute truth he has found in the Holiest of books. Inerrancy does not mean foregoing interpretation. As he points out, the bible insists that Christians "use their minds".

"But what I saw was Dawkins and co. using Christianity of the more benign manifestation - not like the rather less polite form championed by strict-interpreters or cold-call proselytizers - as a generic disqualification in a professional situation. That has me thinking "foul"."

That is ok. Nobody is without partiality! I'm sure you can't see anything on your side of the fence except fresh paint! From my point of view, the paint is clean and perfect over here and has preservatives in it, as well! Reading Dawkin's complete statement (of which we originally perused a small paragraph), I find nothing in it to take issue with him over.

Without inerrancy, the Church has nothing, and those in positions of church authority certainly understand that without the idea of inerrancy the church has no moral authority to proselytize anything as necessary to salvation (and you could keep your corn, your fatted calves, AND your money)!

I think you rightly identified our possible disagreement as resting in good part on whether or not Gaskell had/has a rigid belief in the Bible as representing the word of a Divine and Perfect God who comes before man and science. I believe that those who dismissed his application for a particular job did so after sincere and serious consideration of his beliefs and whether or not they could prove an embarrassment and a harm to their business and their raison d'etre. I believe they made a rational decision and I believe they had every right to make the decision they made. I believe it was made without prejudice--but certainly not without reason. The history of Gaskell shows (among other things) that he has tried to validate Genesis (a fairy tale if there ever was one) by justifying it word by word and sentence by sentence. (Link to follow)

Gaskell seeks to justify the bible word by word. The prominence of the proffered job posting, together with Gaskell’s glib presentation skills, created a situation which the hiring committee would have been negligent to disregard.

The hope, the Covenants, the promises, the rewards, the punishments, the consequences of disbelief and disobedience--all these are central to ALL Christian doctrine. Someone as intelligent as Gaskell clearly would know this. Gaskell would clearly know that dismissing inerrancy (outside of human error and such) is equivalent to dismissing the FULL AUTHORITY of the bible and those who use it as an Absolute guide to Absolute Reality. As someone outside of the Faith, you may have a blind spot to what following words in an old book entails. All thoughtful Christians (probably more than 40% if statistics serve) believe in inerrancy. When it comes to “Christians of Authority” informing all the major defining acts of Christian doctrinal Authority…we find something closer to 100% (whether we reference the council of Trent or a score of other defining Christian meetings of consensus).

iclnet.org

The bible is not the Aenid or the Life of Johnson. Even though a literal read is an embarrassment in that it is full of the expected absurdities, contradictions, and brutalities of barbarian mythology; and even though learned scholars attempt to overcome these death blows by monkeying with logic (hoping that neither the audience nor the magician will notice that the pea is not under the cup)…nevertheless, the bible really is just a compilation of tribal fancy...lacking authority for both God AND MAN--OR it is (if not inerrant), at the very least INFALLIBLE.

Now what side of that "dichotomy" do you REALLY think Gaskell is on? Or does he sit oblivious under the sword of Damocles waiting to be transfixed? And this might be a good time to inform you that Solon did not create this dichotomy! I know the difference between dry land and water. And people who swim on land and walk on water are pushing ME outside of THEIR company. The inmates do not run the asylum...not anymore and hopefully not ever again...

And Solon does not "make it easy to ridicule all religion and its inherents". They come to me to ridicule and I point out the fact that they are walking on water..if they are. I don't believe I am responsible for loading the ammunition into the other guy's gun!

Considering the bible as a guidebook to accept and possibly borrow the odd cute maxim or phrase from is not a Christian approach. Even really foolish Christians understand that it is the Word of God... or it is just a very poorly written history of tribal wandering and warfare, which would have fared much better in the hands of Beatrix Potter. (and I would trade a thousand Gaskells for one of her, if you want to discuss rabbits or anything else of importance)!

If Gaskell had no history of attempting to justify the bible as the word of God through a line by line comparison to science, I suppose I would be more inclined to allow some tangential tolerance of his shenanigans. But I do not doubt his intelligence and I believe that his "tolerance" of science is contrived and considered and I have no doubt the hiring directors came to the same conclusion. I would have honored the old principle of an abundance of caution. I am satisfied that they did the same, and the $125,000 payment apparently settles the score. You apparently take exception to that--perhaps holding the opinion that the Employer has no rights of preference or selection beyond a rigidly dictated dogmatism of narrowly defined suitability. I don't know. But I know, he has agreed that he has been fairly compensated for not being permitted an open mike so I guess everybody is happy?!

I think Montague put it very well when he opined:

“Science has proof without any certainty. Creationists have certainty without any proof.”

Mr. Gaskell is intelligent and has attempted and will continue to attempt to make science fit into the truthful reality of the bible. If you think he was trying to make the bible fit into the truthful reality of science, then you miss the point entirely. That would be the act of a stupid man intent on a lifetime of wasteful uselessness. Gaskell is not stupid. His critique of Genesis (as an example) took time, thought, and a prior commitment… The bible is the truth and God will reveal more.

Now can you guarantee me that this man puts science ahead of the bible, Mr. Chitte?? Would you like to lose my 200,000 dollar donation”, or will you cough up $125,000 dollars to err on the side of caution?! Hell...I'll spring for the cost!

I've rambled on here with some free association, but I am keenly aware that it would be extremely unfair for me to create a dichotomy and to condemn a man without regard for his opinion. So it is necessary that I let Gaskell have an open mike and speak clearly to what moves and motivates him and to whether science proves the bible or the bible proves science.

incolor.inetnebr.com

Here are some quotes from Gaskell’s writing which have convinced me that he does indeed believe in the inerrancy of the bible and merely believes that appropriate interpretations are necessary because God is hiding certain matters till they are appropriate to be revealed.

“First, before arguing (from any side) about origins and what the Bible says, it is important to actually read for oneself what the Bible says!”

(the implication here is that he is going to show that the bible (when properly understood) does not conflict with science. But he is NOT going to get rid of any words. Real Christians cannot simply lose words that are Divine and God breathed. And Gaskell is a REAL Christian and not the phony kind.

“Some of the ones I'd suggest looking up are John 1:1-3, John 1:10, Colossians 1:16-17, Hebrews 11:3.  From these one learns that Jesus was involved in the creation and that more things than just our visible universe were created.  This is precisely what modern astronomy is finding.”

(No maybes here. He already knows the certainty of the matter as Montague stated. All that is needed is proper hermeneutics to be employed.)

""For controversial issues St. Paul offers important guidelines in the 14th chapter of his letter to the Romans.  First, in Romans 14:5b he says, “Let each person be fully convinced in his own mind”.  Christians are to use their minds!  From this chapter of Romans we can see that true believing Christians are going to be of different minds over some topics.  But verse 3 of the same chapter commands Christians not to regard fellow believers who are convinced of other viewpoints on non-essential doctrines with contempt.  Rather they should “...pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another” (verse 19).

(He has set the pattern he will follow. Everything that seems silly in the bible he will explain as metaphor or incomplete interpretation and as “proof” of this he will use quotes from…guess where?? When he uses these quotes as “proof”, they are 100% Divine and certain (otherwise how could one use them to prove a position?? How indeed.)

""Many challenge the theology of this theory since it requires God to be deliberately deceptive, while the Bible says, “God cannot lie”.

(Here, he is interpreting THAT idea as being God given and error free (this is extremely important because if the bible is not Absolutely true then it has no basis to justify or prove anything). I laughed when I read it because he apparently is unfamiliar with the fact that the bible claims God to be deceptive and a liar in several places! For example:

Ezekiel 14:9
And if a prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet.

2 Thessalonians 2:11
For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. )

Then he goes over various Christian interpretations of Genesis to show that this diversity is merely evidence that

“The Answers are not in yet”.  This is part of my own viewpoint.  I believe that God has not yet revealed everything to us in the Bible (see Deuteronomy 29:29 and I Corinthians 13:9-10,12) and I know that we don't know all the answers in science yet.

""Genesis starts: “In the beginning...”  This is an important and powerful phrase because modern astronomy says very strongly that there was a beginning.  This is implied by the expansion of the universe (“Hubble's law”) discovered in the late 1920's.  The expansion implies that just under 14 billion years ago (see below) everything was in the same place.  This time is commonly referred to as the “Big Bang”.

Now there are thousands of myths that incorporate some variation of the idea “in the beginning”. Only a mind a million miles from science and absolutely convinced of a particular supernatural view of existence would find something noteworthy in this simple line or in all the lines of Genesis. Think about it...

“WHEN WAS THE BEGINNING?  I: WHERE DID “4004 BC” COME FROM?

Not from the Bible!”

He knows what is important and what to emphasis! The bible is the word of God. Anything false did NOT COME FROM THE BIBLE! And if it did come from the bible? Well, it just requires the right interpretation and the appropriate understanding of God’s intent in His infinite wisdom and mysterious knowledge! The bible cannot lie. Didn’t he just remind us of that (forgetting to remind us that the bible contradicts itself there, as elsewhere)? When he discovers his errors he will not throw out any of those inerrant words. He will try to understand them better, is all.

“The important point is that the Bible does not intend for a genealogy to be used as a chronology!  (Its purpose is to show someone's lineage).  Note, in particular, that the Bible itself never adds up the ages and reigns.

With these considerations one can see that an age of 13.7 billion years CANNOT BE EXCLUDED BY THE BIBLICAL GENEALOGIES.

So he is trying to show that the bible knows the true age of the universe. So he must deal with the begats! He does so and now the bible is "scientific" again!

Which leads into something else he must deal with--Genesis!

“HOW LONG DID IT TAKE?

1. What is Meant by a “Day”?”

""Psalm 90:4 also says that a thousand years is like “a watch in the night” (about 4 hours.)”

SEE HOW "SCIENTIFIC" HE IS?! Absolute inerrancy! Psalm 90:4 proves that a day is not 24 hours! 24 hours is 6000 years!

He is convinced that the words must be interpreted--as God is revealing His meaning as we progress in our ability to understand! Even Genesis...the most mythic of the biblical stories (and the most similar to all creation fairy tales) he examines word for word showing (to his mind) that all is good. He does not throw even one word out. Intelligent Christians don't. But because he knows the bible is the word of God (it says so!), he also knows that he only needs to interpret it properly and open his heart to understanding.

Really, I can’t go any further. To take this man seriously is just too silly. Enough. I am glad they paid him off.

Do I say he is a bad man because of these things? No. I have said no such thing. I rather suspect he is just as moral and good as most of us. I don’t think believing in superstitious and unscientific things without any rational justification implies any necessary lack of morality.

I wouldn't want to leave the impression that Gaskell rests his faith solely on his ability to accept the "science" inherent in the perfect God-breathed words of Genesis. He has carefully scoured the bible for other verses which prove that the bible is scientific.

Let us let Gaskell tell us what he believes in his own words. As I read through these "scriptures" I can see Gaskell intently underlining as he pauses to stare starry-eyed around his study. I've never been able to find that G-Spot. But if one thing is certain to a poor atheist such as myself--Gaskell has the G-Spot or rather the G-Spot has him. Did I say I was glad the committee paid him off??

b>Compilations of Martin Gaskell showing how the bible validates science! This compilation is in addition to his thorough attempt to present Genesis as not susceptible to scientific falsification. His Christian underpinnings are clearly not merely a casual flirtation with tribal lore

OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES TO GOD'S ACTS OF CREATION

This is a compilation of scripture references, other than the first two chapters of Genesis, describing God’s acts of creation. Quotations are based on the New American Standard Bible. Explanatory material is given in square brackets, and omissions are indicated with ellipses (...). Verses should, of course, be studied in their original context. I would appreciate hearing of any mistakes or omissions.
