Great satire has that appearance but not that intent. As Swift has pointed out.

Good satire provokes the reader to be critical and to discriminate and form judgments. It leads us past the superficial to a more profound examination of religion and politics, etc.

It is only malicious to the uninformed or the unaware. Good satire is never malicious and I find nothing malicious in Swift, Trollope, or the Landover Baptist Church. When the perfect truth can be provocative, it is a great opportunity to give humanity a nudge. And the Landover Baptist Church uses Truth as a fulcrum to influence social change for what they hope will be the public good. And it is the people of good heart who are thereby ridiculed by certain snarling beasts circling the fragile campfires of reason. :-)

I have observed in a good time spent walking to and fro upon and within the earth that people can look at the same event or situation with remarkably different opinion. Some people find malice in a lot of things. It is no coincidence that people who have a general hatred of satire are often the target of satire due to a certain self righteousness which makes them blind to a great deal going on about them and quite likely prone to carry exaggerated ideas of reference.

Educated people universally regard satire as having great social value and benefit.
