T-Mobile Unveils Very Low-Cost Samsung Galaxy Mini Smartphone

BARCELONA - T-Mobile this week unveiled a new 3G Android smartphone, dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Mini.

The device includes a 3.14-inch touch screen with a 240-by-320 display. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo and includes 160MB of built-in capacity, expandable up to 32GB via microSDHC card. There is also a 3-megapixel camera.

T-Mobile touted the phone's "ergonomic rounded shape and trendy design." The marketing materials also refer to the Galaxy Mini as "cute and peppy" and feature a younger girl accessing social networks and playing music on the device, so it will likely be targeted toward the data-hungry teen.

As Phonescoop points out, this is not from Samsung's line of top-rated Galaxy S smartphones. "Like the Galaxy Indulge, the Galaxy Mini is far from a top-end device. If there's no 'S', it's no flagship device," the blog writes.

Also included is an FM radio, MP3 player, and video capture.

The Galaxy Mini will be available in the U.S. in the second quarter.

T-Mobile announced the phone here at Mobile World Congress. Also this week, T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom said it will launch a near-field communication (NFC) service known as "mobile wallet" in Europe this year, with a planned roll-out in the U.S. and beyond next year.
