Mobile World: Google scores marketing coup with Android pins

BARCELONA - Google scored the marketing coup of Mobile World Congress by giving out free Android pins.

Android is giving out several versions of the metal pins that shaped like the nuclear-green Android robots, and partner companies are also giving out their own branded versions of the pins at the booth.

They are similar to the pins that kids at Disneyland buy and wear; at this week's wireless conference, it's adults in suits running around collecting pins and attaching them to their badge lanyards. The LG booth ran out of Android pins - the company had a scrawled "no pins" on a piece of paper at its front desk.

Other companies said they admired the marketing gimmick by the Mountain View, Calif., company, which is competing with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform and Apple's iPhone.

"Have you caught Android badge fever yet?" said Ross Gan, head of corporate communications for Chinese mobile equipment company Huawei. "It's very clever marketing they did."
