The UAW wouldn't have been a big factor had upper mgmt been doing their job.

It wouldn't have been as big of factor, partially because if management did a great job the drag of the unions would not have been as painful, and partially because the unions didn't get the control and benefits they had without management signing the contract.

OTOH if management had resisted the union strongly, even in good times when there was little in the way of foreign competition and profits where booming than they probably would have had a big problem with strikes. Looking back they probably should have paid this price, but with the political support the unions had (and would have had more of if the company was seen as trying to break or at least tame the unions in the context of high profits for the company), it wouldn't have been easy.

Also the union contract doesn't exist without both the management's signature and the union's, so both are to blame for it.
