Avalon Group, Inc. Appoints Chief Financial Officer

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1997--Avalon Group, Inc. announced today the appointment of its Chief Financial Officer, Von L. Elbert. Elbert, an entrepreneur and founder of several companies, joins Avalon after holding several executive positions in the accounting, data processing and apparel manufacturing industries. In 1972, Elbert founded Elbert & Associates, a data processing company, where, as president and chairman, he led the company through a merger in 1975 with Sta-Fed Computer Tax and built it to become a $30 million annual revenue corporation. He then engineered a successful initial public offering which gained the company a listing on the NASDAQ National Market System. The company was sold in 1989 to CCH-Computax. Elbert then accepted the responsibility of manufacturing, finance and management information systems for Galt Sand Company in Cedar Rapids (an apparel manufacturer), where he successfully negotiated all financing for the company from start-up to sale, helping the company to grow from zero to $50 million in annual revenues. The company was sold to Starter Corporation in 1996. Elbert graduated from the University of Iowa with a BBA and gained his CPA certification in Illinois, working for six years with major accounting firms, Arthur Anderson & Co. in Chicago and Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. in Denver. Elbert has occupied a variety of other positions, including Chairman of the Board of the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, and Board of Director positions with St. Luke's Methodist Hospital, Mercantile Bank of Cedar Rapids, Berthel Fisher Company and Berthel Growth & Income Trust.
