I don't know if the double shorts are exactly a hedge. They're more of an anti-volatility play; if gold bounces up and down for awhile, but never makes an absolute movement one way or another, the DZZ gets crushed. On the other hand, gold hasn't spent much time stuck in a rut over the past couple years (maybe mid-09, early '10). Just something to watch out for.
