Intel announces new $5B plant in Arizona
HILLSBORO, Ore., Feb 18, 2011 (UPI via COMTEX)

On the day President Obama visited Intel Corp.'s Oregon facility, Intel's chief announced the company would build a $5 billion factory in Arizona.

The new facility at Intel's Chandler, Ariz., campus will be the most advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in the world, Intel President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini said in a release.

Construction of the plant, designated Fab 42, is expected to being in the middle of this year and be completed in 2013. The microchip giant said in the release the new facility "will create thousands of construction and permanent manufacturing jobs at Intel's Arizona site."

"The investment positions our manufacturing network for future growth," said Brian Krzanich, senior vice president and general manager for Intel's manufacturing and supply chain. "This fab will begin operations on a process that will allow us to create transistors with a minimum feature size of 14 nanometers."

Manufacturing is the underpinning for Intel's business, allowing the company to provide customers and consumers with leading-edge products, Krzanich said.

"The unmatched scope and scale of our investments in manufacturing help Intel maintain industry leadership and drives innovation," he said.
