I have a different take on the space station. It is international out of grudging necessity. The USA began it as a purely domestic venture, under assurance of a wildly optimistic cost analysis. When faced with the binary choice: Abandon, or share?, we chose Share as the lesser of evils. Trust politicians to spin "it's the best we could do" into "we make great strides toward world peace and prosperity". With all that political wisdom lying around, there's BOUND to be a pony in there somewhere!
