What are the differences between NFC and RFID?

Is NFC a passive transmission device like RFID?

If passive, is it just the protocol stack that differentiates these technologies? If it is the protocal stack, is a key difference being that NFC has bidirectional information flow compared with the unidirectional nature of RFID?

Use cases for the above options would be very different. Do you know of any good sources of "use case thought" for NFC? We have all seen the IBM grocery store example but that one requires an extensive buildout of infrastructure and devices.

RFID was powerful because it could be implemented within a fenced environment with significant benefit. Does NFC have such value offerings?

Thanks in advance.
