>>> He is seen as an apostle of lower taxes, but he supported what was then the largest tax increase in California history when he served as governor, from 1967 to 1975.

This is a re-writing of history. Reagan DID sign the tax increase, but he did so reluctantly, facing an overwhelming liberal majority in both houses in CA. Of course, there was the fact that her inherited from Pat Brown an out of control deficit.

>> Cutting deals with Democratic leaders in Congress, he slashed and raised taxes during his White House days.

But slashed them far more than he raised them, which resulted in an amazing run of economic growth that stretched for 20 years.

>> The debt held by the public climbed on his watch: from $712 billion in 1980 to $2 trillion in 1988, and he never presented a balanced budget to Congress during his eight years in office.

Not in a fair accounting that takes into account the depleted state of the military he found, and the peace dividend gained by his ending the Cold War. A convenient fact often omitted by liberals.

>> As Reagan's reputation grew in recent years, it has overshadowed troubled periods of his presidency, including the Iran-contra arms scandal and the fight over the "Star Wars" missile-defense initiative.

Most people do not know what Iran Contra is or was (that includes you) and just don't care. As to SDI, it forced the Soviets to cave to his nonproliferation demands. And we are still reaping benefits from it TODAY.

So, WTF are you complaining about?
