Republicans tend toward electing candidates rationally, versus the emotional nonsense that got the current occupant of the WH elected. If an openly gay individual runs as a Republican and he has good ideas, I don't know of any Republican who wouldn't vote for him.

But most Republicans will NOT vote for a person solely because he/she is gay or black or whatever. A basic level of competence has to be demonstrated, at which point minority status doesn't matter.

Yes, there is an extreme element of the Republican party that would oppose any gay candidate. Just as there are Democrats who have used Cheney's daughter's homosexuality to oppose HIM. It cuts both ways.

The Republican Party as a whole has moved vastly to the left on the issue of gays over the last 30 years. The fact that the elimination of DADT was supported by many Republicans is evidence of this fact.
