General question for those that spec out their own gear ...

It appears on the surface at least, that would include myself, cow and Witch - maybe Cheeks don't know.

When buying a system I typically spec each item and if necessary enter agreements with my system builder of choice to acquire the gear outside of him and have him assemble (not normal - but in one case I wanted a specific video card that was only offered online from the manu's online store).

Do all of you get someone else to build or do you just buy the pieces and assemble yourself?

I am very hands on but haven't actually assembled a machine from scratch. I think the greatest fear I have is - incompatible memory and having to eat the cost should there be problems. When it is a system builder they can return to their supplier and/or feed the memory to some other system. But if you are buying it all, then you better be right.

I asked cow about this and yes as per shadowman, I learned from someone a few years ago to use Newegg and the reviews to help guide you.

What experience have you all had with putting together a machine? To me I see three main areas of issue:
a) the most difficult would be assembling the MOBO into the case;
b) adding the CPU & fan;
c) Not a problem but just ensuring that the memory works.

I sort of figure if someone else got things to work fine, and I spec'ed out the same gear (and perhaps double checked forums for specific issues) then it shouldn't be all that difficult once the MOBO is mounted.

I would like to learn to build my own box. But also to save money - the local guy I know will do it - charge $50 to install but likewise inflate the prices of each component. If I was pressed I would pay the money to have someone else build it, but am still keen on doing something like this.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Blake
