COSTLY CHECKING

Bank of America will offer four options for checking accounts later this year in Florida. The basic account will cost $6 to $9 a month; the top "premium" account, which pays interest and has certain perks, will cost $25 a month if balances fall below $20,000.

Chase merged three accounts into "Total Checking" that costs $12 a month. The fee is waived if the customer maintains a $1,500 balance or makes a direct deposit of at least $500.

Citi charges $8 a month for basic checking, a fee that is waived after five transactions each month. A higher-level account costs $20 a month unless the customer maintains a $6,000 balance in linked accounts.

Wells Fargo charges a $5 monthly maintenance fee and a $6.95 online bill-pay fee. Fees are waived with qualified direct deposits or a $1,500 balance. Wachovia in Florida will change to Wells Fargo and adopt those fees this summer.
