I guess I can understand what happened with DVDs but how is Redbox able to do the same with Bluray (which is a much newer technology) for only $1.50? I would have thought the studios would have figured out a new distribution model by the time bluray was released.

I could go on and on and... But suffice to say the studios think of themselves as "artists" much more than business people. The act of commerce is sort of dirty to them. Makes for some bad marketing decisions. And then there were the format wars....
