It's a dependency. Nothing more, nothing less.

Just like many seniors are dependent on Social Security. You wouldn't call them "addicted to SS," would you?

Just like we depend on police for law enforcement. You wouldn't call America "addicted to police protection," would you?

Addiction implies that whatever we're dependent on is killing us. Yet oil is not a toxin to society. Oil is instead a wonderful yet precious energy source that should be used wisely. It fuels our economy and it fuels our lifestyles.

In the meantime, let's research alternative energy. Something that can replace oil. Unfortunately it's not going to be solar or wind. Nuclear energy would be a start, and eventually we can move to fusion energy. But that's many decades away.

Until then, let's treat oil like a valuable resource, not a narcotic.
