True, that's what I do for an "emergency" backup. I put a SSD into a USB case and ghost my running windows XP to it once a month and boot from it to make sure it's good. If my hard drive fails, I can plug in the USB drive and keep on trucking. MSFT asks me the "activation" routine every great once in a while, but so far, I've been able to reactivate it online without having to call anyone.

I also do a weekly image backup to another external.

Lot of guys at work use Clonezilla, I always used the free Acronis from WD and Seagate until I recently purchase the 2011 package from Acronis.

Drives are cheap now and with external SATA available (I don't have it yet), you should be able to play and learn anything you don't want to...
