Seeking Backup discussion and suggestions

I have Windows 7 PC

I have a 1TB external HD that I use for backups and I also have backups on my 1TB internal HD. I also do hourly backups via a script of my data and email files onto the external 1TB HD and another 0.5TB HD.

The trouble is Windows7 backup backs up ALL the files on my internal HD, including the backups... so it fills the external 1TB HD leaving little room for backups I do of my important files in case the windows program has a problem.

Is there a way to tell it to not back up some directories? It doesn't give you many choices in the settings I've discovered. I guess I could dedicate the 1TB external HD just for a system image which has a lot of backups of my C drive files... and use my other external HD just for backups... The other solution is get a 2TB external drive.

I think what I really want is a 2TB Network drive so I can share it with my laptop and back both up onto that plus put my email files there so I can access "local folders" from either the desktop or the laptop.

Does that make sense? Any suggestions or thoughts are welcome.

Thanks
