So what is hollow is the fact that facebook is NOT using the Android Contact API that everyone else is using... that is the standard way... all Facebook has to do is adhere to the standard..

Facebook can't "adhere to the standard" without changing the main benefit the Facebook directory-- that the individual entries are maintained by your friends, not you. They change their phone number or address in their profile, it changes on my phone without my personal intervention. Androids' contact API does not allow this.

Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability.

Like I said, Google's justification for removing Facebook integration rings hollow to me. As a user, why would I care about (the illusion) portability of my Facebook directory? It's always in the cloud! Google of all companies should understand the migration of data to the cloud, and they've just made it harder to access some of it with this policy. In fact, they are starting to sound like Apple when they rejected Google Voice from the iPhone the first time.

Moreover, I've never heard of anyone who's ever tried to "export" contacts from an Android device. All your local on-phone contacts are already synced (backed up) to a cloud service somewhere else.
