If this is true, it is a big mistake IMO.
There was once a fella who was a small fish in the pond that was a large Telecom company. One of his responsibilities, among other things, was to deploy and use DSU/CSU's and a management systems from vendor "A". It was the opinion of this small fish; however, that vendor "B" had a better solution.
Said small fish was perplexed when he learned that larger fish favored the products being offered by vendor "A". Rumor had it that "A's" imminent selection was the result of the body politic. (All the while, small fish thought it was the fancy graphics run on vendor "A's" management system that hooked management)
To make a long story less so, in the end vendor "B" came from behind to claim the whole enchalada. It was the right decision in small fish's mind.
Given that Amati has limited resources, I can understand the need not to beat a dead horse. I refuse to believe the horse is dead until I am convinced that BA/NYN are purchasing significant amounts of CAP. I cannot believe any salesman or company worth their salt (like Amati) would not feel the same way.
Take a look at the BBTK thread sometime. I keep hearing how committed BA is to FTTC. This seems to be supported by the fact that institutions hold 50+% of BBTK. It all sounds great and frankly would be great in a lot of ways but all I know is this: BA, BBTK and me all think FTTC is the way to go in new neigbhorhoods yet I am not aware of ANY deployment plans in ANY new neighborhoods. WHY? I cannot understand why and until I understand this, I will not buy the argument that BA is totally commited to FTTC.
Powerful people and companies seem to have a lot to gain by BA deploying FTTC. Indeed BA has warrent's to stake a claim to BBTK and the CAP-16 products (I think). If CAP dominates BA/NYN land it will be 50% politics IMO.
The other 50% will be because CAP vendors can offer:
1. Better price/performance (not likely) 2. Better management systems. (I assume WSTL's is better than AMTX's at present given their head start. I am told AMTX has around 90 employees. You will recall that Wayne Clark said 2 PhDs, 2 good DSP folks and about 5 other assorted folks could do the ADSL product in a year. I hope Amati is devoting significant resources 20-30% man hours to management systems and integrating their products into thing like USRX's total control hub. 3. BA engineer's believe it is technically as good and sales supports them.
Well... I have vented. I am, as always confident that management understands the above. I am equally confident that BA can be persuaded to change their mind on all CAP. (ask John Malone if Ray can change his mind on a dime.)
I have never gotten over the fact that Amati/NEC said they could do VDSL at 60Mbps at 6000 feet! Think about what that means IF it is true.
