Windows OS fragmentation is largely controlled by Microsoft I believe
Microsoft controls the OS, true, but OEMs determine features such as display resolution, RAM, processor, etc (hardware features that would seem to be relevant to FDA certification, like they are with CableCard certification, for instance). In Windows, OEMs are allowed superficial differentiation with included software, desktop icon placement, some skinning, etc. Is Android really any worse? There is hardware variety to be sure, and superficial skins, but no OEM has really forked Android, other than Google themselves, with Honeycomb. |
