<no aircraft carriers, no cruise missiles, no remote drones, no tanks, no factories to manufacture same.>

The Vietnamese didn't have any of those, and they defeated the U.S. Having learned nothing, we are repeating the experience with the Taliban, who have fought us to a bloody 10-year stalemate.

Every winning guerrilla commander has said: The winners will be whoever has the support of the civilians on the battlefield. Nothing else matters. Numbers don't matter. Technology doesn't matter.

Americans are in love with their gadgets, and especially their gee-whiz military gadgets, but these are useless, for either winning wars or making us safe.

<Even nuclear option limited, as the only way to effectively deploy nuclear weapons requires missiles or aircraft to deliver.>

When (not if) an American city is nuked, the delivery weapon will be a container ship, in a box labeled "office equipment". Or possibly smuggled over the border, by someone who thinks he's carrying a bale of marijuana. The vast majority of the millions of containers entering the U.S. are not inspected. We've never been able to stop more than a fraction of the drugs smuggled into the U.S.

The only way to be truly safe, is to have nobody hate you (or your country) enough to want to kill you.
