When I had that Dell XPS it was Realtek and when you plugged in a headset jack, a window would open and I would have to select Headphones.

None of my other computers do this, it could be a Windows 7 and Realtek thing. Not sure.

My ThinkPad uses RealTek and it does not do anything when I plug in my headset, it just works. It's Windows XP.
