You may have already tried this, if so forgive me for being duplicative.

On my XP laptop I clicked on Start, Control Panel and then Sounds and Audio Devices. Then I clicked on the Volume tab. On that panel check to see if the Mute is checked and also be sure the volume is turned way up.

Near the bottom is the settings for the speakers. Again, click on Speaker Volume and make sure they are set properly.

Then click Advanced and make sure the drop-down menu for Speaker Setup is not No Speakers.

This has now exhausted the sum total of my knowledge on this subject.
