SGI adn Apple are events of the last few months. The mere fact that they opted to drop thier own systems means that there was competition - they just lost the against thier competition. You and a lot of other MSFT haters confuse terms victory with monopoly. All of the technology market participants had a choice between Sun, SGI, Mac and Wintel. The market chose Wintel due to superior price performance ratios and depth of application selection. The fact that Wintel offered these advantages does not negate the fact the consumer did not, and still does not, have a choice.
