Did a quickie search for Drive Signatures but cannot see anything that answers both "what are they?" and "why do they matter?". Logic based on your post seems to indicate that the signature is embedded in the BCD and if the sig is wrong the system will not boot? So one uses the DVD repair to fix this?

Wonder what the purpose is of this. I smell copy protection but ...

(In the DB I use, you can "compile" code against the DB schema [it's structure]. If the DB changes, the code will fail to run since the CRC check will fail (CRC of when the code was compiled against the DB structure v. the current CRC of the DB structure). Talk about a giant PITA, but in later versions of the DB you can omit forcing this "enhancement" when compiling.)

Your comment implies that Acronis is good at this - that it will handle the "alterations required for booting" but others need to be questioned? Good to know since I am using their product.
